Biography

·  LAURENT HADRIEN  ·

·  BIOGRAPHY  ·

My visual work focuses on natural occurrences of shapes and patterns in nature. I am interested in the forms of light as it travels through elements. One single source can be diffracted, filling a space with motions that become self interacting, creating a final representation of the paths taken.

The musical aspect of my work also draws from the idea that sound is an element that can be broken and manipulated, for it to regain a certain form.

The images of captured particles compliment the movement of sound, itself an agglomeration of waves.

.

Using non-digital effects to realise my compositions, the end goal is to show the complexity of light diffraction. While the purpose is not necessarily to confuse the viewer as to what the image represents, the question of what the photography is capturing can arise. The films are an extension of that idea, to further show the paths of light when they hit reflective or transparent obstacles. Patterns are often hidden in plain sight, and a slight movement or change of angle can significantly reveal what was veiled. From the initial source to the eye, light takes on many branches of possibilities. One deviation can lead to a completely different landscape and recollection of events.

The musical aspect of my work follows a similar idea. Sounds, emanating from a single source, needs reflection to travel to a sensory receptor. The paths that it takes can also be tampered with. From the micro cutting of sound waves to the extension of original recordings, all come together to create soundscapes that alter the listener’s sense of space.

.

“Obscuring natural sound, movement and imagery, Laurent Hadrien takes focus on the textures that lie within each medium to reveal something larger than what first meets the eyes or ears. With attention to detail in recorded sounds, Hadrien strings together self revealing orchestrations experimenting in electro-acoustic movements as well as writing his own compositions for film, installations and personal “keep safes”. Complimentary to his music, the imagery and videos that he relates them to offers a sense of something larger trapped within objects and spaces that would normally go unnoticed. Taking advantage of light reflection and refraction as well as natural patterns etched into surfaces, Laurent Hadrien aims to blur the lines of what is real and what is digitally generated.”

.
